CTET Paper 1 Analysis
Child Development & Pedagogy
One of the most important sections in the CTET 2018 exam is ‘Child development and Pedagogy’. The topic wise analysis for the section is provided below.
The Syllabus for the section is divided into 5 major modules namely Child development & Learning, Learning and Intelligence, Heredity and Society, Diversity and Learning and Addressing Learning Anomalies.
Child Development and Learning
This module deals with Concepts & principles of development, processes of teaching & learning and Motivation. Four major areas of child development are covered in this module – Physical, Cognitive, Mental and Social. A year on year analysis of the CTET previous question paper shoes that this module accounts to about 5 questions or 18.15% of the total questions in this section.
Learning & Intelligence
Learning and Intelligence module deals with several theories on learning, perspectives of the construct of intelligence, multi-dimensional intelligence, and development of cognition and emotions. Analysis on previous CTET papers provide the distribution of question in this section to 6 or 20.61%
Heredity and Society
Heredity and Society play a major role in the development of a child. While Heredity deals with acquired properties/aspects of child’s behavior from his/her parents, Social influences also have a profound impact of the development of the child at every stage. This module accounts for about 5 questions or 18.15% of the total questions in this section.
Diversity and Learning
Every child is different and has different capabilities and inclinations. This module discusses the types of diversity and their influence on the child. It also covers how a child behaves as a problem solver and scientific investigator. About 4 questions or 13.23% of the total questions in this section can be expected from this module.
Addressing Learning Anomalies
As every child is different and has different capabilities, each child has their own way of learning and difficulties. This module deals with both learning difficulties as well as certain gifted qualities in children that a teacher should keep recognize and teach accordingly for all-round development of a child. About 5 questions or 18.15% of questions can be expected from this module.
Evaluation is an important aspect in teaching. This module deaisl with learning assessment, critical thinking and concepts of child-centred and progressive education. On an average 4-5 or 16% of questions can be asked from this module.
English language is section is a mandatory section for all the candidates. This section attempts to test not only the English language skills of the candidate but also tests the understanding of language related learning outcomes of students. In other words, topics related to Pedagogy are also asked in this section with focus on language related aspects.
This module contains reading comprehension and questions based on a paragraph or text. It is an attempt to test the ability of the candidates to understand the meaning of the text and draw meaningful conclusions in ones’ own words. Consistently 9 questions are being asked every year from this module.
This module focuses on candidate’s poetry reading and comprehension skills. Poetry is a powerful tool to promote oral fluency and provides strong foundation for reading. Around 6-7 questions can be asked from this module.
Learning and Acquisition
Learning and acquisition of knowledge and habits is the pedagogy related aspect of language. This module consists of principles of teaching a language and importance of grammar in the process of learning. About 5 question can be expected from this module.
Evaluation of Language
This module deals with the reading and listening aspects of language and related learning processes. It also includes evaluation of language comprehension and language proficiency. Every year 4-5 questions are asked from this module.
Challenges of Teaching Language
This module focuses on challenges faced by teachers in teaching English language especially in Indian context with diverse, multi-cultural and multi-lingual student community. About 5 questions can be expected from this module every year.
Social Studies – History
History plays an important role in understanding the development of civilizations and circumstances leading to the formation of cultures as we see today. Below is the topic wise breakup of history section in CTET 2018 exam.
Early Human History
This module discusses the meaning and sources of history, early human societies and the formation of early cities. About 3 questions can be expected for the early human history.
Topics related to early kingdoms and political institutions is tested in this module. 3 questions or about 5% of questions can be expected from this module.
Delhi Sultanate/Mughal Empire
Questions related to Medieval India and Mughal empire form bases for this section. 2 – 3 questions or about 5% of questions can be expected from this module.
Social Change & Colonialism
This module covers the British colonization of India and several social factors and changes during British rule in India. This is an important part of Indian history and 4 questions can be expected from this module.
Freedom Struggle & India after Independence
Most significant topic in Indian history is the freedom struggle. This module focuses on period from 1857 revolt to post independent India. 2 – 3 questions can be expected from this module.
Social Studies – Geography
Topics and distribution of questions in Geography is given below
Roughly about 3 – 5 questions can be expected from Earth and Solar System which deals with basic physical geography while 5 – 6 questions each can be expected from Natural & Human Environment and Natural & Human Resources modules respectively.
Social Studies – Social and Political Life
This section covers several aspects of Social and Political setup of the country. Below graph represents topic wise distribution of questions in this section.
This module consists of the concept of government, its structure and functions at the state level and center level. It specifically discusses the Parliamentary form of government that is adapted in India. This module contributes to about 3-4 questions.
Democracy, constitution & Judiciary
Democracy is a form of government for the people, of the people and by the people. This module discusses the Indian constitution and the Judiciary. This module contributes to about 3 – 4 questions.
India is a country with high diversity. This module discusses different forms of diversity in the country along with the disparities that arise out of this diversity. Historically 2-3 questions were asked from this topic.
Concept and Nature of Social Studies
Concept and nature of social studies module deals with the learning aspects of Social studies and this can be treated as a related Pedagogy concept. 6 – 7 questions have been asked from this module in previous papers.
This module also derives from the pedagogy concepts and goes into the classroom processes and activities that help in learning Social studies. About 8 questions can be expected from this module.
Problems in Teaching Social Studies
This deals with the problems that teachers encounter in teaching social studies and the evaluation mechanism to understand the learning of students in the subject. Historically 6 – 7 questions are asked from this module.
Topic-wise analysis of the syllabus can help students understand the probable weight of each topic in the CTET 2018 examination and also help in identifying the level of preparedness in terms of percentage of what the exam demands. Candidates are advised to make use of this trend analysis and prepare for the exam accordingly.
